about Salún

Established in Reykjavík in 2023 by Ásrún Ágústsdóttir, Salún sparked from a desire to honour Icelandic textile- and swimming heritage by bringing modern aesthetics into everyday life. Taking inspiration from the unique salúnweaving patterns and ideology combined with the nation's bathing culture it creates functional pieces that intertwine in a timeless, bold design.

The Salún weaving

The origin of the salúnweaving has deep national heritage and can be found in Icelandic sources dating back to the 13th century. Woven in such a way that a pattern band (overband) lies on a single shaft foundation and forms patterns that are characteristic for this type of weaving. Since the pattern thread lies on top of the weaving, salún-weaving can be delicate and therefore it is inconvenient to have the pattern too large. Having our products woven with jacquard weaving allows us to play with the scale of the pattern units and expand each pattern unit much more than in the traditional salún weaving.
